Coree M. Reuter-McNamara for The Sport Horse
Laine Ashker has known horses her entire life. A California-native, Ashker got her start in the saddle at three, and was a member of the United States Pony Club before she even started school. By the time she was 13, Ashker knew her life would revolve around horses and eventing, so her family moved to Virginia.

Ashker began perfecting her craft while working for Stephen Bradley, and later, Phillip Dutton. She has continued to further her own education by riding with top level instructors, such as David O’Connor, Buck Davidson, Kim Severson, and William Fox-Pitt.

Over her career she has been extremely successful at the three-star level, with numerous top ten placings. She was part of the Olympic test event in Hong Kong in 2007 on her horse, Anthony Patch, and has completed the Rolex Kentucky CCI**** twice with Anthony Patch, finishing 8th in 2010, and 20th in 2011. In 2013, Ashker and “Al” won the USEA American Eventing Championships, and were named the Adequan Gold Cup champions at the advanced level.

In addition, she is also a successful riding instructor in central Virginia. Her students enjoy her positive attitude, patience, and desire to create a fun atmosphere for riding and competing. One of her goals is to have her students leave each lesson with a smile on their face. In addition to her wide variety of adult amateurs students in varying disciplines, she frequently coaches the local Pony Club.

Ashker and her mother, Valerie, have established Crow’s Ear Farm, with home bases in Virginia and California. Both Laine and her mother take pride in bringing up horses themselves, specializing in off-the-track Thoroughbreds. They have recently started campaigning their own homebreds, as well. Both Valerie and Laine have a special place in their hearts for the Thoroughbred and are huge promoters of the breed.

Laine’s other accomplishments include being on the Dean’s List at the University of Virginia, completing the Business Class Accelerated Program at the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond, and singing the national anthem with her mother at a number of professional sporting events. Laine has also co-founded Brushfire Media with her father and a fellow Business Class Accelerated Program graduate.

The Sport Horse is excited to have Laine Ashker join the team and write about her road to the 2014 WEG. We wish her luck on her journey, and can’t wait to hear about all of her adventures!
