Oklahoma City, Okla. – June 27, 2013 – By Christa Morris – National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) ended preliminary competition in the $435,000-added NRHA Derby Open today with entries vying for a piece of the $615,000 estimated open payout.

Show Me The Buckles (Wimpys Little Step x Sunet Whiz) and NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider Andrea Fappani (Scottsdale, Ariz.) ended the day with a 222.5 to tie yesterday’s leader (A Smokn Whiz and Jason Vanlandingham). Show Me The Buckles is a 2008 stallion with $126,000 NRHA LTE. He won the 2011 NRHA Futurity Reserve Championship with Arno Honstetter and 2011 High Roller Reining Classic Futurity Reserve Championship with Fappani. Rebeca Martin (Gold River, Calif.) is Show Me The Buckles’ owner and nominator.

Yesterday A Smokin Whiz (Topsail Whiz x PF Nu Miss Royal Rsk) ridden by Jason Vanlandingham also marked a 222.5. The pair has already been successful in Oklahoma City winning the level 3 open division at the 2011 NRHA Futurity. Sunrise Ranch, LLC (Fayetteville, Ar.) is the owner and nominator of A Smokin Whiz ($83,120 NRHA LTE).

The winning horse of the NRHA Derby level 4 open division, to be determined on June 29, is guaranteed to earn $50,000 in addition to a $5,000 gift certificate from Twister Trailer, Bob’s Custom Saddle, Montana Silversmiths buckle, Rios of Mercedes boots, Purina feed, Assure Guard, Platinum Performance CJ, Classic Equine pad, Classic Equine skid boots, SmartPak gift card, Pard’s Western Shop gift card and a headstall from The New West. The open finals begin at 1 p.m. (Section 1) and 5:30 p.m. (Section 2).

Custom Banjo Wins Level 2 and Level 3 Go-Round
Custom Banjo (Banjo Whiz x Custom Bobbie) and NRHA Professional Patrice St-Onge (Gainesville, Texas) held the high score (22) in the level 3 and level 2 open division. St-Onge and Melanie Schuckers’ 2008 stallion were finalists at this year’s National Reining Breeders Classic. Custom Banjo was nominated to the NRHA Nomination Program by Nedpoint Quarter Horses Inc.

Spin N Wimp Has theTop Score in Level 1 Go-Round
Spin N Wimp (Wimpys Little Step x Spinning Beauty) and Mirjam Giraudini-Stillo marked a 219.5 to lead the level 1 open division. The 2007 gelding is owned by Andrea Stillo and has over $40,500 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings. Spin N Wimp has been shown primarily in Europe racking up wins at the Italian Reining Horse Association Futurity (4-Year-Old) and German Breeder’s Futurity.
