Representing a local event for Liz and her Chailey Stud Equestrian Centre, Brightling was contested over the UK’s hottest weekend of the year thus far, making for challenging conditions for horses and eventers alike.

Liz made the short trip to Robertsbridge with Cooley (HHS Cooley) and Blackie (Fernhill By Night) entered in the CIC** section, while Trevor (Endymion Entrechat) competed in the CIC*, and all three would come away with excellent results.

Blackie delivered one of his best performances to date to secure a fantastic second place in the hotly contested class, while Cooley belied his lack of outings this season by taking fifth, completing a wonderful result for Liz and the team.

Both produced good Dressage tests and went clear around the Show Jumping arena before the sweltering temperatures, coupled with the twisty and hilly terrain, made for a challenging Cross Country test. Indeed, such was the difficulty posed by the course that only two horses in the section, which counted several top Olympic competitors among its near-50 entrants, managed the course without fault. That both Blackie and Cooley received just a handful of time penalties in the fiercely contested class made the result all the sweeter for Liz.

Meanwhile Trevor completed an excellent weekend by placing third in an extremely hard-fought CIC* section with over 80 entries. After a somewhat subdued period the event proved a real return to form for Trevor, who came very close to winning only to roll the final pole in the Show Jumping test. However he subsequently delivered an excellent clear and fast Cross Country performance to secure an overall podium place. His next event will be the Novice Championships at Gatcombe in three weeks’ time where Liz hopes his growing confidence can help produce further strong results.

To complete a fantastic weekend, Liz also took home the South East Eventers League trophy in both sections after placing highest of the SEEL competitors in CIC* and CIC**.

Liz Halliday: “I’m really pleased with how the weekend went. The results we secured here bode extremely well for the future and it was great to see all three horses on such excellent form. To have all of them in the top-five at an international event is something to be very proud of, so I’d like to thank the Chailey Stud team for their hard work and the long hours they’ve put in.

“Next I’m planning to compete Blackie in the Hartpury CCI** in August as well as Fox in the CIC***.  I am also really hoping that my results at Brightling will have helped to secure my place to compete in the World Equestrian Games Test Event in France with Cooley later in August. It’s a fantastic opportunity that would be a great experience for both of us and, given his performance this weekend, I feel that he’s ready to take it on and perform well.”
