Kristian Roberts for The Sport Horse

Hello everyone and welcome to the behind-the-scenes story of my journey to the 2014 World Equestrian Games!

But first, a little about me.  My name’s Kristian Roberts and I’m a 21 year old vaulter from Moss Beach, California with Pacific Coast Vaulters, and this year I’ll be competing for a spot at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. I am trying to qualify as an individual, as a member of the team competition, and in the Pas de Deux — the Triple Crown of Vaulting! But before we get to all that, let’s go back a few years.

I got started vaulting back in 2006 with the club called Half Moon Bay Vaulters because one of my friends from gymnastics asked me to come out and try it.  After testing the waters of competition at a small local fest, I was hooked!  I greatly admired the top vaulters in the country and hoped to one day vault like them.  Two years later I won my first national championship title in the silver division.  Then in 2010 I competed at WEG in Lexington, KY.  After graduating high school in 2011, I quit gymnastics in order to go to college as well as vault full time.

So after traveling to a few more international competitions including the 2012 World Championships, that pretty much brings us to today where, in a few days, me and my wonderful teammates from Pacific Coast will be kicking off the this exciting vaulting season in Lynden, Washington where the first WEG selection trial of the year is being held!

I’m thrilled to be able to share my journey with all of you this year, and an exciting journey it will be!  Next week, I’ll let you know how the competition went and where we’re off to next!

Kristian Roberts began vaulting at age 13 and has been hooked ever since. In 2008, Roberts was the Silver Men Overall Champion at the USEF/AVA National Championships. In 2010 he placed fifth at the USEF/AVA National Vaulting Championships, which also served as the USEF Selection Trials for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. In October of 2010, Roberts represented the U.S. for the first time at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. He won the USEF/AVA National Championships in 2012 and 2013, and is now seeking a spot on the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games vaulting team.
