A string of impressive performances from Chailey Stud’s horses helped Liz Halliday enjoy an excellent fortnight of success, starting at Somerley Park on July 29.

The California-born, British-based professional dual sportswoman knew that a good Novice section result would help Baloo (Darola Diamond) qualify for CCI* competition, and he did not disappoint.

A customary strong Dressage test saw the pair occupy second place ahead of Show Jumping where Baloo again performed beautifully to go clear, before completing an equally convincing Cross Country round which was enough to guarantee second place overall.

Having sampled his first taste of Novice class competition at Somerley Park, Benny (Benaughlin Little Hero) was back in BE100 Plus action at Chilham Castle a week later (August 4) as Liz continued to put him through his paces.

While Halliday felt the Dressage score was not entirely representative of Benny’s test, she was nevertheless delighted with clear Show Jumping and Cross Country rounds that ultimately helped the pair finish seventh in section.

Fresh from their CIC* victory together at Brightling, Halliday was also keen to give Cooley (HHS Cooley) a run out at Chilham Castle ahead of his Intermediate debut at Aston-le-Walls (8-11 August).

And once again he appeared in fine form, delivering a lovely Intermediate Dressage test and clear Show Jumping round to sit third overall, before Liz chose to withdraw him from the Cross Country in preparation for his next event just four days later.

In fact, Aston-le-Walls would have three of Chailey Stud’s members competing with Bud (Newmarket Malt) and Fox (Red Letter II) making appearances in the Advanced class. But it was Cooley who impressed most thanks to a solid Dressage test, strong Show Jumping round and promising Cross Country run on Intermediate debut at the Northamptonshire venue.

Liz Halliday: “Everyone at Chailey Stud has had a busy couple of weeks so it’s a nice reward and encouraging to see the strong results continuing throughout the summer. Baloo qualifying for CCI* competition was really great, especially as his Dressage was so impressive and he has improved so much. I was also very happy with Cooley’s Intermediate outing. There’s a lot more to come from him.

“Hopefully the horses can maintain their good form in the events to come and fingers crossed we will now continue to have better weather and ground conditions in the second half of our season.”
