Docutainment Films to Chronicle Harry’s Participation at Equine Extravaganza

Richmond, VA: Harry de Leyer and Snowman inspired a nation and are now motivating a Horse Rescue Initiative. In the book,Snowman, Elizabeth Letts draws the reader into a magical journey of what can happen when a horse, on what might have been the last journey of his life to a slaughter house in Northport, meets a kind-hearted horseman named Harry de Leyer. It was a fortunate day for both Harry and the tired grey plow horse, who later became known as Snowman, when they met that fateful day in 1956 at the New Holland Auction. Eighty dollars sealed the deal and the grey discarded horse whose seller said wasn’t sound, went home with Harry.
Harry and Snowman’s journey led them from New Holland to New York… Madison Square Garden, in fact. The big grey, who at first awkwardly stumbled over jumps, went on with Harry to win many national show jumping championships. As visitors on the Johnny Carson Show and two time poster boys on the cover of Time Magazine, the duo became rock stars in the sports world. Yet perhaps more importantly, Harry and Snowman continue to symbolize what can happen when a “down on their luck” horse is given a second chance at life.
Equine Extravaganza’s Horse Rescue Initiative is about horses like Snowman and men and women like Harry…. men and women willing to have faith and make a difference.
Six horse rescues, seventeen horses waiting for their “Harry,” and twelve rescuers with their Rags-to-Riches story will headline Equine Extravaganza’s Horse Rescue Initiative. The Rags-to-Riches Rescue Horse Talent Search will feature both Harry de Leyer and Elizabeth Letts as judges, along with Elizabeth Shatner and Ericka Caslin of the American Horse Council’s Unwanted Horse Coalition.
“The energy around this competition is exhilarating,” said Vicki O’Hara, event organizer. “We are so honored to have such a legendary equestrian, and someone who continues to inspire adoption of rescue horses, as one of our judges and clinicians.”
Ron Davis, award winning documentary Director and Producer who assembles Emmy® and OSCAR® nominated teams to develop and produce his films, was also inspired by Harry and Snowman’s story. His inspiration turned to action as he began a project to produce a feature length documentary chronicling the life of Harry and Snowman. The documentary will include a trip to Equine Extravaganza to film both Harry’s participation in the Rags-to-Riches Competition as well as his jumping clinic on Sunday.
Attendees will have the chance to see Harry judge the Rags-to-Riches Rescue Horse Talent Search on Saturday, Nov. 3rd at the Extravaganza, and watch Harry’s jumping clinic on Sunday at 10:00 AM. Yes, at 85, Harry is still coaching and training horses!
“This is an amazing story,” Davis remarked. “It has never been told on film, and especially not in a feature length documentary. This story stands the test of time.”
