Press release

Entries for the 2014 event are due March 1.

Oklahoma City, Okla. – February 21, 2014 – By Christa MorrisThe National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is gearing up for the 2014 NRHA Derby that will be held June 21 – 28 at the Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. Thousands of spectators, exhibitors and horses attend the event each year with their eye on the most talented and beautiful reining horses in the world, plus approximately $1 million in cash, prizes and nominator incentives awarded there. Owners of derby-aged horses are encouraged to get their entries in by the March 1 entry deadline to be involved in this premier event. Below is more helpful information for those looking to compete.

2-Point Penalty Review: In 2013, the NRHA Derby Judges successfully tested the review of 2-point break-of-gait penalties. Those 2-point penalty reviews allowed them to gather insight prior to recommending changes that could affect all NRHA-approved shows.  The information gathering process will continue at this year’s Derby; judges will be allowed to review 2-point penalties for break-of-gait, jogging more than two strides and freeze-ups, as long as more than one judge has called the penalty 2. A complete set of NRHA Derby conditions can be viewed at nrhaderby.com.

These same procedures will be used during the 2014 NRHA Futurity as well. The event conditions can be viewed on the Forms page of nrhafuturity.com.

The Annual General Membership Meeting (AGM): The AGM will be held during the NRHA Derby on Sunday, June 22 at 2 p.m. in the Sale Arena. The meeting will be preceded by an Affiliate Summit at noon and followed by an NRHA Professionals Meeting. Make plans to attend these events to find out what’s happening in NRHA. March 24 is the deadline to submit agenda items to the NRHA office.

Reminder: All horses must be nominated to compete in the NRHA Derby. Owners still have a chance to do so; see the Nomination Conditions for complete details.
