Sunday Rolex Blog – Stadium Jumping Leads to Exciting Finale

Like yesterday, everyone here at Rolex was hoping the rain would stay away – at least until the competition was done. Just like yesterday, it mostly did.

My “seat” for this year’s stadium jumping phase was the same as last year’s seat. Outside the packed stadium, past the crowds in the stands, the announcer’s tower and the jumping course – I was stationed right by the stadium entrance/exit ramp and next to the warm-up arena.

Why, you ask? Why would you go watch the warm-up ring when the most nail-biting, exciting part of the competition is behind your back?

Simple. From that spot I can watch the jumbo-sized television screens and see part of the ring when I stand by the entrance/exit ramp. And, when I’m by the warm-up ring, I’m sometimes closer to the action than I ever would be in the arena. Where else could you position yourself to be three feet away from British rider William Fox-Pitt, who was last year’s winner, as he smiles and tightens his girth and checks his saddle?

Sure, I watched the competition today and I held my breath as each of the top-five went around. I cheered just as loudly at the end of their rounds, too. But, I also got to see the quiet before and after the storm….

As many people had hoped, the rain nearly held off. There was a brief shower during the awards, but it finished before the victory gallop. As you probably already know Andrew Nicholson from New Zealand won with his dark horse Quimbo and finished third on Calico Joe. Brit William Fox-Pitt was second on Seacookie TSF and American Buck Davidson and Ballynoe Castle RM (a.k.a. Reggie) were fourth. U.S. rider Lynn Symansky and her Thoroughbred gelding Donner took the fifth spot.

It’s raining awards

And one more behind the scenes shot. At the final press conference for the riders there was a champagne toast. Congratulations to all!
